What is "Certified Organic"?

Certified organic products are those which have been produced, stored, processed, handled and marketed in accordance with precise technical specifications (standards) and certified as "organic" by a certification body. Once a certification body has verified conformity with organic standards, the product can be labeled as such. This label will differ depending on the certification body, but can be taken as an assurance that the essential elements constituting an "organic" product have been met from the farm to the market. It is important to note that an organic label applies to the production process, ensuring that the product has been produced and processed in an ecologically sound manner. The organic label is therefore a production process claim as opposed to a product quality claim.

How do I know if something is organic? 

Certification is your best guarantee. Any reputable grower, processor, or retail store will use the organic label if the product has been certified by an independent third-party organization, either governmental or private.  The USDA has identified for three categories of labeling organic products:  100% Organic: Made with 100% organic ingredients  Organic: Made with at least 95% organic ingredients  Made With Organic Ingredients: Made with a minimum of 70% organic ingredients with strict restrictions on the remaining 30% including no GMOs (genetically modified organisms)  Products with less than 70% organic ingredients may list organically produced ingredients on the side panel of the package, but may not make any organic claims on the front of the package.

How does a farmer go about converting land to organic status? 

Converting land to organic status is a three-year process. There is a two-year conversion process consisting of building up the fertility of the land. Produce grown in the first year cannot be stated as organic. In the second year produce may be stated as “In Conversion”. It is not until the third year that produce may be stated as fully organic. Soil and natural fertility building are important parts of organic farming.

Why does organic cost more?

As the demand for organics continues to grow, the cost will continue to come down. When the cost is higher, consider these facts:  Conventional farmers use all of those chemicals and synthetic pesticides because they end up reducing the cost of production by getting the job done faster and more efficiently. Without them, organic farmers have to hire more workers for tasks like hand-weeding, cleanup of polluted water and the remediation of pesticide contamination. Conventional farmers use certain chemicals to reduce their loss of crops. For example, synthetic pesticides ,repel insects and antibiotics maintain the health of the livestock. Since organic farmers don’t use these, their losses are higher, which costs the farmer more and increases the cost to the consumer. Additionally, without all the chemical preservatives added to conventional foods, organic foods face a shorter storage time and shelf life. Organic certification is no easy — or cheap — task. In addition to the usual farming operations, farm facilities and production methods must comply with certain standards, which may require the modification of facilities Organic farmers don’t receive subsidies like conventional farmers do. Therefore, the price of organic food reflects the true cost of growing. In order to avoid cross-contamination, organic produce must be separated from conventional produce after being harvested. Additionally, organic farms are usually located farther from major cities, increasing the shipping cost.
